Presentation - Amy Patrick Stamm, The History of the Library
- 1923 the library was located in members’ homes. The Progressive Women’s Club, Edna Buschow especially, felt the need for a public library in Valley Center.
- It was moved to the drugstore downtown, then to the local city hall (old Masonic building), before the house was bought in 1951 that would eventually house the library for many years.
- 1983 the library bond was granted ($51,000 or 1/2 of the building price) to build a public library.
- Edna Buschow died in 1983 but was a very influential person in the funding and building of the public library so it was named in her honor… The Edna Buschow Memorial Library.
- The original house was moved from the property (donated by the Progressive Women’s Club) to Derby. At the time of the library building, City Hall and the Community Building were also being built.
- The original library was built to accommodate the 8,500 books that were used in the library. There were no computers or other technology.
- The current library houses approximately 55,000 books, 12 computers, and numerous DVD’s/VHS’.
- You can view the plans for the new library at the current library. We are in the process of raising funds to build.
Meeting Adjourned.
